Low-purine diet - a sample weekly meal plan
Last updated: September 27, 2026
The theory behind a low-purine diet sounds simple: less meat, seafood and alcohol, more vegetables, whole grains and dairy. In practice, though, the hardest part is often planning meals day to day. Below is a sample 7-day meal plan, built mostly from low- and moderate-purine foods, that you can use as a starting point for your own diet.
Monday
- Breakfast: oatmeal with milk, yogurt and cherries
- Lunch: rice with roasted vegetables (peppers, zucchini, carrots) and a fried egg
- Dinner: sandwiches with cottage cheese, cucumber and lettuce
Tuesday
- Breakfast: sandwiches with cheese and tomato
- Lunch: pasta with tomato sauce, zucchini and basil
- Dinner: potato salad with egg and a yogurt dressing
Wednesday
- Breakfast: plain yogurt with fruit and nuts
- Lunch: chicken breast (skinless, moderate portion) with groats and grated carrot salad
- Dinner: pumpkin or carrot cream soup
Thursday
- Breakfast: oatmeal with apple and cinnamon
- Lunch: potatoes with cottage cheese and chives, with beetroot salad
- Dinner: sandwiches with egg salad and radish
Friday
- Breakfast: pancakes with cottage cheese and fruit
- Lunch: fish (e.g. cod) in a small portion, baked with potatoes and vegetables
- Dinner: quinoa salad with cucumber and feta
Saturday
- Breakfast: scrambled eggs with tomato and bread
- Lunch: whole-grain pasta with lentils and vegetables
- Dinner: cottage cheese with chives and tomato
Sunday
- Breakfast: muesli with milk and seasonal fruit
- Lunch: roast chicken (small portion) with potatoes and coleslaw
- Dinner: a light salad with cheese, nuts and a honey-mustard dressing
A few rules for building your own meal plan
- Treat meat and fish as an addition to the meal rather than its main component - smaller portions, less often.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day - it supports the kidneys in clearing uric acid.
- Limit alcohol, especially beer, and sugary drinks.
- You don't have to fully eliminate vegetables like spinach or asparagus - in reasonable amounts they're safe.
